2003 Mainship Pilot 30-2 “Galene”
Starting in 2003 Mainship re-designed it’s predecessor and rebranded it as the Pilot 30-2. This redesign had extensive retooling below the waterline, including a shortened keel, a tighter shaft angle, a tunnel draft, a new five-blade prop, and what the builders call a ‘full sandshoe’ for prop protection. The changes allow the Pilot 30 to sneak into skinny water.
The hull has classic lines, and Galene’s hull was ordered from Mainship with the upgraded Awlcraft Patriot Blue painted hull, antique white gelcoat decks, and Awlcraft white bootstripe. Matched with her Stamoid Desert Tan marine fabric top she is the recipient of many compliments.
The Pilot 30-2 redesigned hull never feels underpowered, and with minimal planing transition the hull feels comfortable any throttle opening. So how does she handle? You ease the throttle forward and the 6-cylinder turbo-equipped Yanmar diesel accelerates smoothly for cruising at 2800 RPM/16 MPH. the Bennet trim tabs are available if desired to raise/lower the bow when cruise speed is reached. The Pilot 30-2 corners flat, which is good for safety. Galene is fitted with the optional bow thruster, which should eliminate any doubt you may have about dealing with prop-walk while docking a single-screw boat.
In the cabin, attention was given to creature comforts beyond day boat capabilities. The interior is trimmed in cherry with a cherry and holly floor. The unique folding queen berth with innerspring mattress does not impede movement about the cabin. You lift the (normally folded) spring mattress with the aid of gas struts; the front half of the mattress folds out from beneath and rests on a sliding aluminum frame, which stiffens the structure. The unique design also allows for the space beneath the berth to observe and maintain the reverse cycle AC/Heat unit, hot water heater and the bow thruster motor/controller.
Her cabin also includes a head with Corian vanity countertop, standup shower with floor drain, fresh water electric toilet, and ample storage. An exhaust fan and AC/heat duct vent maintain comfort in all seasons. Headroom is an issue on many cruisers this size, but the Pilot 30-2 offers a reasonable 6 feet, 3 inches of clearance. In the galley there’s a single-burner electric stovetop, built-in microwave, top loading fridge and cherry wood storage cabinets above and below. You can seat four around the dining table, which has four folding leaves to save space. And, the table top and support is removable to allow transferring for use in the cockpit for outdoor dining. The cockpit/cabin is enclosed by a sliding, lockable door.
There are marine vinyl cushioned seats for the helmsman and the observer. Helmsman’s seat swivels and is adjustable fore and aft, a good idea because the pedestal is set well back from the wheel. You sit high for good view; the standard footrest is essential. Moving aft, the two 6-ft longitudinal settees with backrests for guests will also provide for additional berths. Excellent storage lockers are found below both port and starboard settees. The engine hatch is long and narrow and also lifts on hydraulic struts for inspection and servicing the propulsion system.
The Pilot 30-2’s open-backed helm/cockpit design is a sensible setup for the hot summers typical of the Chesapeake Bay and it’s many tributary waters. The combination of Galene’s custom bimini top which includes a forward roll-up opening section above and aft of the windshield, side opening ventilation windows at both helm and observer’s seats, and thoughtful warm season enclosure screens along both settees, which replace the cooler season Isinglass full cockpit enclosures, add to a more comfortable experience than the Pilot sedan designs with their hardtops and port/starboard hard side enclosure panels. The transom door provides easy access to the swim grid with built-in folding ladder, enhancing your on-water activities. And after climbing back aboard, wash off with the transom mounted fresh water shower.
The Galene is a four-owner boat, and the current owners purchased her in December of 2020. Service records from October 2007, operation and maintenance manuals for all systems on the boat, and numerous spare parts will be transferred to the new owner.
This 2003 Mainship Pilot 30-2 is not just a boat; it’s your ticket to a cruising adventure.
